Here I am trying to look more at shapes as individual forms on my character designs. Rather than just painting something in the sort-of-aesthetic-i-want. Looking at shapes on other character designs has really helped me think about clothing designs more in-depthly and think about each shape before i draw it. The shape of the shoulder plates, the shape of the knee plates, how these things link together. Rather than just painting something that looks similar-ish to my research. By jigsawing my designs together like this I think they have come out looking a lot stronger.
I am going to create 8 variations all together but these are the first four. The one that stands out the most is definitely the fourth. I think the gold pops against the red much more than the silver and looks much more distinctive. I also like the more armored design of four it looks more aggressive and suitable for the dragon-inspired outfit inspiration.
Because I have been using traditional Asian dress and DA:I as inspiration so far, I think the designs look to medieval-y/swords and sorcery for a sci-fi planet brief. This is something i will address in my next four variations.
Linking the designs back to the shape work I did. The skirt design on 1, 2 and 3 is based on mainly 3 with the tunic over the full skirt. But I also took influence from the multi layering on 4.
The arm plate on all of the designs is based on/taken from 5.
The collar on 1 and 2 of my designs is taken from 8 on the reference sheet.
the collar on 3 of my designs is taken from 10.
The collar of my fourth design is taken from 12 on the reference sheet.
The skirt on 4 is taken from 9 on the reference sheet.
The mail legs are inspired by the arm plate on design 7 of the reference sheet.
The top design on my 2nd design is taken from the "top" of design 2 on the reference sheet.
The corset top is inspired by the tunic from picture 3 on the reference sheet and is also inspired by the form fitting designs of 8-10. The pointed wait has been added to keep in keeping with the rest of the pointed design.
(these designs are also mocked up in a flat-coloured lineart-type style influenced by that use in character concept mock ups from the DA:Inquisition art book.) - shown below.
