Trung Sisters | Vietnamese Rebel Leaders

Trung Sisters, byname of Trung Trac and Trung Nhi   (flourished ad 39–43), heroines of the first Vietnamese independence movement, who headed a rebellion against the Chinese Han-dynasty overlords and briefly established an autonomous state. Their determination and apparently strong leadership qualities are cited by scholars of Southeast Asian culture as testimony to the respected position and freedom of women in Vietnamese society, as compared with the male-dominated societies of China and India.

Basically:
China conquered Vietnam (where women had equal power with men) and replaced the tradition of women power with Chinese political authority and the idea women should be in the home. Based on patriarchy. Women's roles and status in society was drastically reduced. Vietnamese resented this and Trung sisters lead a rebellion.

This story reminds me of Atwood's "A Handmaid's Tale".

Set in a United States set not very far in the future, society takes the book of genesis from The Bible absolutely at its word. Main character Offred is a handmaid. In this world she is one of the few fertile women left. Offred not her real name, don't ever find out her real name. She is indoctrinated into new world order. Hippocracy is still there for men. Offred has surrendered to society because if she doesn't its all over for her. She doesn't really fight, most people aren't freedom fighters at heart ad will do whatever they can to survive.
Government outlaw women working - one of the first tings they do.
Then (no paper money at this time in future) anyone marked as female on bank details - accounts get frozen and given to husbands.
She says to husband at least we still have each other but then realises, we don't have each other any more, he as me.
If you are part of a minority group, it is very unlikely people outside your group will fight on your behalf.
(Republic in book) new country almost - follows ultra strict christian law. At first they say divorce is okay, if you are part of the faith. Later on, when they have dealt with other threats to society, they turn on divorcees - people who have broken the laws they temporarily allowed. But no one speaks up whilst this is happening to the divorcees, which is how the society fails. They take it down minority by minority till there is no one left to fight for who is left.
All it takes for evil to triumph is for good people to turn a blind eye.

Also, the Trung sisters remind me a bit of the sand snakes(or I suppose  should say the sand snakes remind me of the Trung Sisters) from ASOIAF.

(After the death of their father by Ser Gregor Clegane, the oldest of the Sand Snakes, Obara, Nymeria and Tyene, began to pressure Doran Martell to declare war in retribution, and became involved in various plots to effect the same, including agitating the Dornish populace. Concerned that their efforts would undermine his own schemes, Prince Doran had the oldest ones confined to tower cells in Sunspear, with the exception of Sarella, who was in Oldtown.[1]The youngest four, however, were isolated in the Water Gardenswith their mother, to prevent them from being used in the plots of others and drawing Dorne into a war.

"It would gladden my heart if I could assure you that the Sand Snakes were alone in wanting war, but I will not tell you lies, ser." - Doran Martell)
