I had a lot of Star Wars character design books as a kid, I collected them, and something I was sure I remembered reading was that Queen Amidala's costumed were based on traditional Mongolian fashion. Because my design are also sci-fi mixed with traditional Asian fashions. Amidala's designs are something I felt I really needed to make myself aware of. On one hand, Amidala's designs having a similar basis to mine means that there is a legit and marketable avenue to explore. On the other hand, it means that I could risk making my designs look like a star wars rip off. Obviously I want to avoid that. To avoid that I need to be aware of Amidala's designs.
I do really like them. I always loves the rich fabrics and strange shapes. Most noticeably though, on the top left of the image you can see how blatantly the designs were taken from Mongolian costume. Because no one really knows about Mongolian dress they've been able to blatantly rip it off whilst giving the impression it is unique and unseen before. It is easy to see why the designs have been taken though. The shapes are really unique and have strong silhouettes.
