Dragon Age Concept Art

I just realised I needed to update the blog with Dragon Age references, ones I actually use, a lot.

When I first started the blog I posted about wanting to use the Tarot cards as references. I still really love the art on those cards a lot but they arent what I've been looking to during my development process.

I own the dragon age artbook and have it constantly open by my laptop when I'm working for both style references, as requested in the brief, but also as reference for lineart and colouring styles.

Despite the brief asking for a more Last of Us type of realism I feel that I've learnt more from looking at the Dragon Age artwork.

My style was already pretty realistic and detailed like in the Last of Us artbook and I already have my own method of working to create detailed, realistic illustrations as that's what I specialise in.

Conversely, a lot of the development concept art in my Dragon Age artbook is very simplistic. It gets design ideas across very quickly with very few lines and colours. I think looking at this artwork is what has helped me grasp design better this year.  Like I said, I could already create detailed illustrations but getting a grasp of actual shape and silhouette design was something that had never worked for me before but looking at professional art that is so broken down to basic levels has really helped me take a step back from my own work and build it up from the very basics.
